At the beginning of 2020 I got my first carnivorous plant, a Cape sundew (Drosera capensis). In the first few months it was pretty easy to take care of. I kept the tray underneath it wet at all times, using filtered water. I experienced little to no issues within the first month. I took it outside to sit in direct sunlight for around 1-2 hours a day.

The first issue I experienced was quite bizarre. My bug eating plant, got bugs. Specifically aphids. Now if you own a carnivorous plant you know that they HATE any type of nutrients. So, I was quite stumped. Usually when my plants get any type of bug I spray them with some neem oil and in a few days they are happy again. But I couldn’t give neem oil to my sundew. The solution: drowning.

Initially it did seems weird putting a plant into a bucket of filtered water, but it really did work. Sure my sundew did take a few weeks after to recover but all of the aphids were gone. He was in the water for around 24 hours.

Once a few weeks had passed he started to recover, his new leaves were ‘sticky’ again and he started to grow pretty rapidly. Besides the aphids, my sundew has been very easy to take care of and very rewarding.
