When I first began growing seedlings, they never survived. Now I liked to ignore the fact that I forgot to water them for weeks and COMPLETELY negelected them. After a few weeks of taking care of them, I realized it’s actually quite easy.
So here are my, TOP TIPS FOR GROWING SEEDLINGS
1. Water, water, water. Plants need water to grow. Therefore, if you don’t water them, they won’t grow. Start by putting a timer on your phone at the same time every day (make sure it’s a time you are always home) and soon it will become a habit. Most seedlings only need to be watered once a day, unless you are going through a hot patch.
2. We usually grow seedlings in small containers and not in the groud yet. Top tip is to turn the container every day. If you don’t do this, they will begin to grow towards the sun. When you rotate the seedlings, they begin to grow straight. Along not detrimental to survival, it is very aesthetically pleasing.
3. Plants are a lot more sturdy than we think. They have adapted to live in the wild where water might not be readily available. In saying this, if you forget to water them once, they will not die. They may begin to wilt, but will not die. BUT try not to go more than two days without watering them or they will begin to die.
4. Drainage holes are very important. Plants are designed to soak up the water they need. If there is extra water near them, they begin to lose water – process known as osmosis. Holes at the bottom of the container allow excess water to leave.
5. Transplant sickness is very common. This occurs when your plant gets moved to new soil or a new location. The plant needs time to adapt, they may look like they are beginning to wilt but they are just adjusting. After transplanting them, ensure to water twice a day for a couple days after moving.
